1 | What does Jeremiah 31:31-34 refer to? | Jer 31:34 | shpagach | 98029
What does Jeremiah 31:31-34 refer to? As a Christian, I was always taught this was the new convenant we live under (Grace) because Jesus was the ultimate sacrifice and mediator of this covenant. (Hebrews 9:15) I've been discussing faith with a friend who converted to Messianic Judiasm. There are those who put a totally different spin on this, say the "new" covenant was only for Israel and Judah (vs. 31) I don't see it that way. I see that Jesus went to the Jews first, but then open the way for the gentiles through Paul. How do I prove it? Or can I?

There are two things about the New Covenant that you can show applies to all Christians: v.33, "I will be their God, and they shall be My people.", and v.34, "...for I will forgive their iniquity, and their sin I will remember no more." In Matthew 1:21 we read, "...it is He who will save His people from their sins." Sounds like the New Covenant doesn't it (see Luke 22:20)? Follow this string in Hebrews to see that the New Covenant is already established for all who trust in Jesus, Jew or Gentile: 8:6-13; 9:13-15; 10:10-12,14-18; 12:22-24. Finally, in Luke 24:46,47 Jesus states His intention that forgiveness of sins be preached beginning in Jerusalem but then spreading to all nations. His people are made up of people from all nations, Jew and Gentile. The Bible speaks of only ONE New Covenant, the book of Hebrews says it is already established, and Jesus' intentions was for forgiveness of sins be offered to all people. If the New Covenant is not now in force, then Jesus is not now Mediator and there is no forgiveness of sins available to anybody. This should be proof enough. I hope it helps. |
