Did the sword and famine happen at the same, or were they overlapping, successively or something else? Which would you want? Why? |

Greetings Searcher! I looked in the Ryrie Study Bible, and there were two cross-references: Ezekiel 14:10 and Jeremiah 23:15.. Ezekiel 14:10 is interesting, but Jeremiah 23:15 is a little more 'direct' in relation to this verse (Jeremiah 14:15). Jeremiah 23:15 states, "Therefore thus says the LORD of hosts concerning the prophets, 'Behold, I am going to feed them wormwood and make them drink poisonous water, for from the prophets of Jerusalem pollution has gone forth into all the land.'" [NASB] It is interesting that the false prophets pronounced that no sword or famine would come upon Israel, but the Lord turned this very same proclamation against them, by saying that they will be 'consumed' by the sword and famine. It would be conceivable to say that the 'sword' could mean 'death' and famine would be the means through how they met their death. If these false prophets did drink poisonous water (Jer. 23:15), then it would not be such a "quick" death, like being struck by a sword. Also, those who listened to the message of the false prophets would suffer famine, since the poisonous water would make the land barren, causing a famine in the land. It would be reasonable to think that people would much rather have a 'quick' death rather than to see death slowly played out before their very eyes, even though the Lord may have a different ending in mind (Job 5:20). Your Brother in Christ, Makarios |

I would want sudden death ... I don't like pain. |
