If you happen to run into people who claim that the word "almah" in Isa. 7:14 and not "virgin", or that Matthew mis-translated it I have gathered all of the available evidence in one place at http://biblestudy.iwarp.com
2 | Does "'almah" mean "virgin"? | Is 7:14 | Makarios | 25828
Greetings Dave, I'll check out your website.. The only modern Bible versions that I can find that does not render Isaiah 7:14 as "virgin" are the RSV, NRSV, Bible in Basic English (1965) and Good News Bible.. The most common "alternate" rendering of this word is "young woman." However, I believe that the best (and most theologically correct) way to render this verse is as "virgin." Other than those four, I cannot find any other text that would translate "almah" as anything different from "virgin." Your Brother in Christ, Nolan |

Nolan, You may find, as I did, that there is actually an abundance of evidence supporting the idea that "'almah" meant virgin. Well, I better cut this short lest I be accused once more of "blah, blah, blah". |

4 | Does "'almah" mean "virgin"? | Is 7:14 | Makarios | 27974
Greetings again Dave! Yes, I do believe that "almah" in Isaiah 7:14 SHOULD BE translated as "virgin." So there is no argument there from me! :-) I am in complete agreement with you on "almah" being "virgin" in Isaiah 7:14. The Zondervan NASB Exhaustive Concordance and The New Strong's Exhaustive Concordance both affirm the rendering of "almah" as virgin in this verse. Blessings to you, Nolan |

I agree with the virgin birth translation. But if it is only a prophecy of the virgin of birth of Jesus, (and it is a prophecy of the virgin birth of Jesus) what good is it for a sign to Ahaz? wdc |

Hi Aixen7z4, If I am guaging your thoughts correctly, I agree that the main message has to be about the Christ, for this is God's word. But I think that the message was there for the people of the time also. Thank you for your Scripture. Let me offer this comparison for you to reflect on. **Stars and parentheses are mine for comparison. 1 Peter 1:13,-16, "Therefore, gird your minds for action, keep sober in spirit, fix your hope completely on the grace to be brought to you at the revelation of (Jesus) Christ. As obedient children, do not be conformed to the former lusts which were yours in your ignorance, but like the Holy One who called you, be holy yourselves also in all your behavior; 16 because it is written, "You shall be holy, for **I am holy." Isaiah 8:8, "And the spread of its wings will fill the breadth of (Your) land, O Immanuel."...10 ...For God is with us. 11 For thus the Lord spoke to me with mighty power and instructed me not to walk in the way of this people, saying, "You are not to say, 'It is a conspiracy!' In regard to all that this people call a conspiracy, And you are not to fear what they fear or be in dread of it. 13 It is the **Lord of hosts whom you should regard as holy..." We are children of God. A child of the King. But Jesus was the holy Child, the Son of God. From the heart, Ray |
