BradK, "God's name is not Jehovah. It is one of His names for sure but THE name, no." This is something that i've been confused about also... Can you help me understand what you mean by "THE name." How many names does God have? Thanks Julia |

Hi Julia, Here are a few things I'd offer. One, my main point in stating that God's name is not Jehovah was to counter the erroneous claim by the JW's that this is somehow THE name of God. It's not! Elohim is used for God some 2,570 times in the KJV. The most frequently used word for God is 'Lord' in the KJV and 'Jehovah' in the ASV. Second, James White in his book, "The Forgotten Trinity" says (speaking about the Triune nature of God), "The problem is of course, God is completely unique. He is God, and there is no other. He is totally unlike anything else, and as He frequently reminds us, 'to whom then will you liken me?'" Third, God has many names within scripture. He is first called Elohim in Genesis, in fact some 32 times in the first chapter! In the OT, He is also called: Jehovah, Adonai, El-Shaddai, Jehovah-jireh, Jehovah-rophe, Jehovah-nissi, Jehovah-M'Kaddesh, Jehovah-shalom, Jehovah-tsidkenu, Jehovah-rohi, Jehovah-shammah. So, which name is the name of God? Nathan Stone in his book, "Names of God" notes that translators have always had difficulty in finding a suitable word for the Hebrew word we translate God. He continues, "Now a name in the OT was often an indication of a person's character or of some peculiar quality. But what one name could be adequate to God's greatness? after all, as one writer declares, a name imposes some limitation. It means that an object or person is this and not that, is here and not there. And if the Heaven of heavens cannot contain God, how can a name describe Him?" (By the way, I'd highly recommend this book for you.) I think this point is well-deserving of our contemplation. God is infinite and beyond our complete comprehension, so how can Jehovah alone be HIS name? This is one aspect where the Watchtower is clearly deficient in their understanding of God. As Stone continues, "Even so, the OT contains a number of names and compound names for God which reveal Him in some aspect of His character and dealings with mankind." I hope this helps. BradK |

Hi Julia, One more thing you may want to consider in regards to the name Jehovah. You can ask your husband how he would understand or deal with Ex. 3:13- 14! Ex 3:13 Then Moses said to God, "Behold, I am going to the sons of Israel, and I will say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you.' Now they may say to me, 'What is His name?' What shall I say to them?" Ex 3:14 God said to Moses, "I AM WHO I AM"; and He said, "Thus you shall say to the sons of Israel, 'I AM has sent me to you.'" (NASB) Moses asks God (Elohim) what name He should be called if the children of Israel ask. God (Elohim) tells Moses, to tell them "I AM" has sent me... God's name is specifically given as "I AM". So here, God's name is I AM- not Jehovah. BradK |
