"Love will enable the soul to persevere in the ways of godliness against all discouragements, by putting a blessed interpretation, and a heavenly construction upon all the afflictions, sorrows, and discouragements which an upright heart can meet with in the ways of God. All the afflictions and discouragements which upright hearts meet with, love will thus interpret and expound: 'Oh! all these afflictions are but means that God will use to rub off my dross and filth, to convey more of Himself! They are all my friends, and shall work for my good! All these cursings, God will turn to blessings,' says Love. 'All these afflictions which befall me, are but out of some noble designs that God has to reveal more of Himself and of His glory to me. It is but that He may empty me more of myself and of the creature, so that He may communicate more of His own sweetness and fullness to my soul,' says Love. 'I know, though for the present it is bitter, yet,' says Love, 'it will be sweet in the end. I know the way to the crown is by the cross, and I know all those afflictions shall lead me to more heavenly enjoyments of God!' Love thus puts a sweet interpretation on all the afflictions which befall the soul." --Thomas Brooks

"Our faith in reference to dispensation [the divine ordering of worldly affairs], is to do two things: First, to believe in general, though dispensation be rough, stormy, black, yet Christ is fair, sweet, gracious; and that hell and death are servants to God's dispensation towards the children of God. Abraham must kill Isaac; yet in Isaac, as in the promised seed, all the nations of the earth are blessed. Israel is foiled, and falleth before the men of Ai; yet Israel shall be saved by the Lord. Judah shall go into captivity, but the dead bones shall live again. Read the promise in general, engraved upon the dispensation of God. Garments are rolled in blood in England and Scotland. The wheels of Christ's chariot, in this reformation, go with a slow pace: the prince is averse to peace, many worthies are killed, a foreign nation cometh against us; yet all worketh of the best to those that love God. Second, hope biddeth us to await the Lord's event [timing]. We see God's work, it cometh to our senses; but the event that God bringeth out of His work lieth under-ground. Dispensation is as a woman travailing in birth, and crying out for pain; but she shall be delivered of two men-children: Mercy to the people of God and Justice to Babylon. Wait on till the woman bring forth, though you see not the children." --Samuel Rutherford
