1 | define "gold of OPHIR" | Is 13:12 | Magdala777@aol.com | 27539 | ||
Gold of OPHIR, mention in several places in the O.T., seems to be of a particular kind. I know OPHIR means ashes; it was the gold used in THE TEMPLE King Solomon built; King David mentions it specifically in what he is giving for the building of THE TEMPLE. (See 1 Chronicles 29:4). My two questions are: Does this phrase mean a specific (ie pure) type of gold? Where is OPHIR? The Bible states it is in the east. |

Gen 10:22-29; 1 Kin 9:28, 10:11, 22:48; Isa 13:12 Ophir is assocaited with fine gold. Ophir is that it was a place or region accessible by sea from Ezion-geber on the Red Sea, from which imports of gold, almug trees and precious stones were brought back by the Tyrian and Hebrew sailors. Josephus has identified it with the Golden Chersonese, i.e., the Malay peninsula. It is now generally identified with Abhira, at the mouth of the Indus. Some say was it somewhere in Arabia, others have placed it in Africa. Being in the line of Shem - Arpachshad - Eber - Joktan, I'd lean toward Arabia. Searcher Searcher |
