Dear KJM, There are aspects of Isaiah's prophecies that have to do with the people and events taking place in his own day. There are further aspects related to a generation or two in his future. There are more aspects that have to do with the first advent of Jesus Christ as Savior. There are even aspects that have to do with the second advent of Jesus Christ as Judge. From God's perspective, I am certain that some of these things simply bundle together as a single "thing." Our own chronological and cultural perspective cause us to see them as distinct "pieces." Perhaps this analogy will help: When you are approaching the mountains you see all the peaks ahead of you. Some of them look side by side in the distance. However, as you get into the midst of the mountains, you realize that some of the peaks are behind you and others are ahead of you. You now know that the peaks were not side by side after all. In the same way, Isaiah as prophet is seeing the unfolding of redemption similar to the way we see the approaching mountains. You and I, though, have the perspective of being in the midst of the mountains, some peaks having past and others still ahead. In your study of Isaiah, you will often face this question. You'll see things that are clearly speaking of the first advent of Christ, things that are clearly speaking of the second advent of Christ, and other things that could be either. Just remember that although any given passage has a single interpretation, our God in His providence cares for the needs of His children at the time it was written as well as the needs of His children through to the time of the glorification of the church. Beyond that, you'll have to ask about more specific passages for more detailed answers. In Him, Doc |
