It was taught at a conference that in Song of Solomon 2: 10-17, that Solomon(who represents Christ)called to his love (who represents the church) to come away with him. They said that she gave the excuse of the foxes in her vineyard and turned him away. Is this correct?
2 | Christ and the Church (Song of Solomon) | Song 2:15 | Makarios | 59033
Greetings Kristi, The single verse in the book of the Song of Solomon that mentions "foxes" is 2:15.. In that verse, the Bride does say (in response to the Lover) to 'catch the foxes for us', which is possibly an allusion to 1:6, where she says "My mother's sons were angry with me; they made me caretaker of the vineyards, but I have not taken care of my own vineyard." From the answer that you gave, its quite possible that the people at your conference took this verse literally and interpreted it literally. However, the theme is regarding the love that the Lover and the Bride share, and this is written in prose. Therefore, it is quite difficult to interpret these verses so literally, and it is quite possible that the Bride is speaking of herself as the vineyard in 1:6 and 2:15, as well as in 8:12. Here is some commentary on 2:15.. "Catch us the foxes. Perhaps, as she literally did in the vineyards, Solomon wanted her to do by analogy in their relationship, i.e., to remove those things in their relationship that would spoil their blossoming love. It could also be thought of as "Let us.." (1) I hope this helps! Blessings to you, Makarios (1) MacArthur Study Bible, 1997, Word Publishing, pg 944. |
