" In Leviticus, part of the priestly code prohibts a priest from touching a dead person or going to a grave except for his closest relative (Lev 21:1-2. This was ritual purity command only for priests. Anyone was rendered ritually impure by contact with a deadcorpse (Lev 22:4. But a High Priest may not even make himself unclean even for his father or mother when they die. (Leviticus 21:10-12) I live in an area with many Jews. I am told that those among the Orthodox Jews with the name Cohen or Cohn are considered decendents of priests and will not enter cemetaries for burials. Emmaus |
