Dear twilliams2, Welcome to the forum! English distinguishes between "can," "may," and "ought." However, people are often not careful to select the appropriate word. Instead they use the word "can" interchangeably with the others! (My children don't do this because I drilled the distinction into their heads while they were growing up. It is an important concept if we are to rightly divide the Word.) At any rate, when people ask these sorts of questions, I'm always uncertain as to what they are actually asking. So I'll answer your question using all three words, hoping that one of them will be the answer for which you were actually looking. Question: Can we speak to the dead? Yes, we are able to speak to anything. However, comprehension by the object we address will vary based on the object's nature. For example: A fellow English speaker will hear the sound, and understand. A non-English speaker will hear the sound, but might not understand. A deaf person will not hear the sound, therefore they will not understand our words. Animals might hear the sound, but won't comprehend what we intended to say. Rocks and trees won't even hear the sound of our voice, and they lack any means for comprehension. Dead people are a lot more like rocks than the other things we've mentioned. They cannot hear, nor can they comprehend, nor can they respond. (Job 14:14-22; Ecclesiastes 9:5) Question: May we speak to the dead? Yes, nothing forces us not to speak to anything which we choose to address. It is good to keep in mind that talking to things that are inanimate may, however, result in people questioning our sanity. Question: Ought we speak to the dead? No, Scripture is pretty clear that talking to the dead is "an abomination to the Lord." (Deuteronomy 18:11. See, also, the story of Saul attempting just such a thing in 1 Samuel 28.) In Him, Doc |
