Verses 1-12 are teaching the way of wisdom. They are contrasted with verses 13-18 which show folly. Here is an excerpt from Ryrie's notes "9:1-18 The teachings of the first eight chapters are summarized, as both wisdom (Proverbs 9:1-6) and folly (Proverbs 9:13-18) invite men to a banquet to partake of their benefits. 9:1 Both wisdom and folly have a house (cf. Proverbs 9:14) to which each invites people. 9:7-12 This section points out the contrasting ways of the scoffer and the wise. 9:7 The wicked person will not only not receive criticism but will turn on the one trying to help him. 9:10 A reiteration of both the motto of the wise teacher and the theme of the book (Proverbs 1:7). 9:12 An individual may choose wisdom and reap its reward, or scoff and incur the penalty. 9:15 Who are making their paths straight. Who go straight on their ways; i.e., who are living in an upright manner. 9:17 The foolish woman promotes the attractiveness of what is forbidden; Stolen water and bread eaten in secret may be figures of illicit intercourse (cf. Proverbs 5:15-20; Proverbs 30:20). EdB |
