Proverbs 6:30 says "men do not despise a thief who steals to satisfy himself when he is hungry" in reference to adultery (Stealing someone's wife, I guess). It seems to me God is acknowledging sexual desire, here compared to hunger; I sense the same sort of leeway granted as when Paul says it is better not to marry, but better to marry than burn in lust. Does orthodoxy recognize any sex outside of marriage as unsinful? You never know, somebody might start shooting people or raping because of frustration. Isn't it better to be in a committed relationship and satisfy natural urges? Is it really so wrong? | ||||||

Greetings Phaedrus! I think you have misunderstood Prov. 6:30. Solomon is contrasting adultery and theft. The thief will get some sympathy when he steals because he is hungry, but he will steal be punished. However, he who committs adulter will get no sympathy, no mercy, and a much worse punishment. Scripture is very clear that sex is intended only for marriage. As for those who aren't married, they must simply exercise self control. We aren't animals who can't control our desires. We are people, and as such God expects us to live holy lives. Further, God didn't give the rules on sex simply to stifle our fun! There are severe consequences to sex outside of marriage: disease, emotional problems, ect... Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
