Angelinwaiting you wrote "but rest assured if there are bad things happening to good people, they are receiving what God has seen fit according to HIS will." Where in scripture do you see this? |

Dear Val, I find the affliction of God better than mountains of gold! "Behold, blessed is the one whom God reproves; therefore despise not the discipline of the Almighty!" (Job 5:17) "Before I was afflicted I went astray -- but now I keep Your word. It is good for me that I was afflicted -- that I might learn Your statutes. I know, O Lord, that Your judgments are righteous—and that in faithfulness You have afflicted me." (Psalm 119:67, 71, 75) "And you have forgotten the exhortation that addresses you as sons: My son, do not take the Lord's discipline lightly, or faint when you are reproved by Him; for the Lord disciplines the one He loves, and punishes every son whom He receives. Endure it as discipline: God is dealing with you as sons. For what son is there whom a father does not discipline? But if you are without discipline -- which all receive -- then you are illegitimate children and not sons. Furthermore, we had natural fathers discipline us, and we respected them. Shouldn't we submit even more to the Father of spirits and live? For they disciplined us for a short time based on what seemed good to them, but He does it for our benefit, so that we can share His holiness. No discipline seems enjoyable at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it yields the fruit of peace and righteousness to those who have been trained by it." (Hebrews 12:5-11) If all that happens to me does not come directly from the hand of God, as He fulfills His eternal purpose in conforming me to the image of His Son... oh my... what a frightening thought! That leaves only unthinkable conclusions. In Him, Doc |

Not everything that happens to a christian is discipline from the Lord is it Doc. There is another component in the scheme of things and that is that we live in a fallen world where there is evil and sin both physical and spiritual. |

Whew, Val... if God is not providentially in control of the very last molecule in the universe, I'd question that He was God at all. Furthermore, if He isn't in control, then He'd never be able to make a promise... He'd only be able to express His hopes! One of the cool things about being part of a confessional church, is that so many of these simple questions about God have already been summarized from Scripture. Our confessions are not infallible or inspired as is the Word, but they draw their authority from Scripture alone (sola Scriptura). "Nothing happens by chance or outside the sphere of God's providence. As God is the First Cause of all events, they happen immutably and infallibly according to His foreknowledge and decree, to which they stand related. Yet by His providence God so controls them, that second causes, operating either as fixed laws, or freely, or in dependence upon other causes, play their part in bringing them about. (Genesis 8:22; Proverbs 16:33; Acts 2:23)" --London Baptist Confession of Faith 1689 (chapter 5, paragraph 2) Yes, Val, we live in a fallen world... but we have a God who is sovereign even over fallen worlds! There is not one single thing that can happen to a believer that God does not carefully choreograph for His glory and the believer's ultimate good (Genesis 50:20; Psalm 119:71; Romans 8:28). James 1:13 Let no one say when he is tempted, "I am being tempted by God"; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. James 1:14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. James 1:15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. |

Yes, that's right, Val... Good point! You are bringing up the branch of theology called theodicy. Had you pointed this out to the Reformers, they would not have slapped their foreheads and said, "Oh my! We hadn't thought of that!" :-) Sola Scriptura takes the entire Word of God into account! Hence, the old divines also wrote: "God hath decreed in Himself, from all eternity, by the most wise and holy counsel of His own will, freely and unchangeably, all things, whatsoever comes to pass; yet so as thereby is God neither the author of sin nor hath fellowship with any therein; nor is violence offered to the will of the creature, nor yet is the liberty or contingency of second causes taken away, but rather established; in which appears His wisdom in disposing all things, and power and faithfulness in accomplishing his decree. (Isaiah 46:10; Ephesians 1:11; Hebrews 6:17; Romans 9:15, 18; James 1:13; 1 John 1:5; Acts 4:27, 28; John 19:11; Numbers 23:19; Ephesians 1:3-5)" --London Baptist Confession of Faith 1689 (chapter 3, paragraph 1) Theodicy is pretty heady stuff, but there's an article by Dr. W. Gary Crampton that's fairly easy to read: http://gospelpedlar.com/articles/God/god_evil.html In Him, Doc |
