1 | The Gospel and Postmodernism | Prov 21:2 | hobbs | 168183
The men's group at our church has been studying the effects of Postmodernism on the culture, and, the problems and opportunities it presents for our presentation of the Gospel. Rom 1:16 For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. Specifically, I am looking for an entrance through the arguements which "postmodernists" throw up in an effort to thwart our presentation of the good news. I would appreciate input from those of you on forum that may cast light on this topic. Thanks, John |

2 | The Gospel and Postmodernism | Prov 21:2 | mark d seyler | 168184
Hi John, Are you thinking of the growing trend to reject absolute truths, and objective reality, in favor of subjective and changable reality and relative truths? Prov 21:2 Every man's way is right in his own eyes, But the LORD weighs the hearts. Jer 17:9 "The heart is more deceitful than all else And is desperately sick; Who can understand it? To anyone who tells you there is no such thing as "absolute truth", you can ask them if that is absolutely true. As far as I can tell, the only instances where "postmodernism" actually means anything in when it is used in reference to art and architecture. Otherwise, its just a fancy way of saying "I don't want to believe that!" Its putting oneself as judge of all. James 4:11 "Do not speak against one another, brethren. He who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks against the law and judges the law; but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge of it." Judging the Law means automatically that one is not obeying the Law, but rather "demands" that the Law obey them! So make sure they are at least aware of what the Law is that they judge, and will be judged by. www.thewayofthemaster.com has a good presentation showing how each of us have broken God's Law. The main point is that if the Holy Spirit is speaking to a person, and drawing them to Jesus, they will respond a lot differently than someone who is not being drawn. Postmodernism presents a new set of arguments (that aren't even really new - "hath God said...?") for the person who wants to reject God. Philosophically, the postmodernist shoots themself in the foot every time. If you can't know if you can know or not, you really have nothing to add. On the plus side, the postmodernist should do well in the seeker-friendly churches, at least until the Lord comes! I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |
