1 | Roll your works to the Lord | Prov 16:3 | Ray | 154249
The word "commit" in Proverbs 16:3 is literally "roll" as in the Amplified version above. What does it mean to roll your works to the Lord? How does our understanding of that word "roll" relate to the next verse where it says that everything has been made for His purpose? How active is God in our ways and plans (relating these verses to Romans 8:28 for instance)? Does He make even our enemies to be at peace with us? (See Proverbs 16:7). Romans 8:28, "And we know that God causes all things to work together for good to those who love God, to those who are called according to His purpose." Proverbs 16:4, NASB, "The Lord has made everything for its own purpose,..." Proverbs 16:4, NKJ, "The Lord has made all for Himself,..." Does the Amplified say it well, "He will cause your thoughts to become agreeable to His will." From the heart, Ray |

2 | Roll your works to the Lord | Prov 16:3 | Makarios | 154265
Greetings Ray, As I know that you already know, man does not always get what he wants, even if he prays for it. The series of verses (and your thoughts) that you have been studying that relate God's purpose to man's thoughts and actions are interesting, and I believe that the answer may lie in Proverbs 16:1-9 read as a whole.. 1 "The plans of the heart belong to man, But the answer of the tongue is from the LORD." 2 "All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, But the LORD weighs the motives." 3 "Commit your works to the LORD And your plans will be established." 4 "The LORD has made everything for its own purpose, Even the wicked for the day of evil." 5 "Everyone who is proud in heart is an abomination to the LORD; Assuredly, he will not be unpunished." 6 "By lovingkindness and truth iniquity is atoned for, And by the fear of the LORD one keeps away from evil." 7 "When a man's ways are pleasing to the LORD, He makes even his enemies to be at peace with Him." 8 "Better is a little with righteousness Than great income with injustice." 9 "The mind of man plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps." [NASB] As you see, there are certain conditions that man must adhere to in order to have his plans established. He must commit his works to the Lord (v. 3), fear the Lord (v. 6), his actions must be pleasing to the Lord (v. 7), his business dealings righteous (v. 8) and then the Lord will establish his plans (v. 3) and make even his enemies to be at peace with him (v. 7). But first, the Lord weighs man's motives (v. 2). If he is proud (v. 5), then he will not go unpunished. But when a man's ways are pleasing to God, then he will be rewarded and prosperous in his ways. Blessings to you, Makarios |

3 | Roll your works to the Lord | Prov 16:3 | Ray | 154307
Hi Makarios, You have written a good synopsis for Proverbs 16:1-9. The only thing I would question is your last sentence which speaks of verse 7 but you also had another passage in mind, such as Joshua 1:8. However, our motives in rolling our works to the Lord is not prosperity for ourselves but in seeing success in our walk with Him. Meditating on His word, being careful to do according to all that is written in it, gaining His approval (having success) and acting wisely. (Joshua 1:8) Judges 18:5,6 gives us the idea of the connection between being prosperous and having the Lord's approval. Judges 18:5, "And they said to him, "Inquire of God, please, that we may know whether our way on which we are going will be prosperous." 6 And the priest said to them, "Go in peace; your way in which you are going has the Lord's approval."" 1) So I would say that the Lord has made everything for Himself (for His own purpose). Proverbs 16:3 does not say that "He will establish your plans." Rather it says that when we commit our works to the Lord, our plans will be established; Amplified version,... "He will cause your thoughts to become agreeable to His will,..." Proverbs 16:9, "The mind of man plans his way, But the Lord directs his steps." 2) I wonder if the word translated "commit" in Proverbs 16:3 but literally means "roll" is the Hebrew word, "megillah"?
