1 | Animals are held accountable? | Gen 9:5 | kalos | 122738
"I will punish any animal or person that takes a human life. If an animal kills someone, that animal must die." Genesis 9:5-6 :: Contemporary English Version (CEV) 5-6 I created humans to be like me, and I will punish any animal or person that takes a human life. If an animal kills someone, that animal must die. And if a person takes the life of another, that person must be put to death. Genesis 9:5-6 :: New Living Translation (NLT) 5 And murder is forbidden. Animals that kill people must die, and any person who murders must be killed. |

2 | Is NIV version not worded right? | Gen 9:5 | Chusarcik | 122803
My NIV version puts it quite differntly:And for your life blood I will surely demand an accounting. I will demand an accounting from every animal. And from each man, to I will demand an accounting for the life of his fellow man. Genesis 9:5 What are CEV and NLT translations? My NIV version seems to indicate animals must give account for their actions rather than die if they kill a human as your two translations indicate. I just looked at King James version and it seems to match your two versions more closely than the NIV. Is the NIV version just not worded properly? Chusarcik |

3 | Is NIV version not worded right? | Gen 9:5 | following him | 122805
The context is not one of standing before God and giving a reason for their actions it is one of holding the animal or person accountable and responisble for their actions and suffering the consequences for them. In this case the consequences of an animal killing a person is the animals death. As well as a person killed another person same consequences.

5 | Is this verse pro capital punishment? | Gen 9:5 | JCrichton | 122818
Hi, Chusarcik! Runs a good argument... I see a few problems with it: a) When was capital punishment established? (If it was not set up by the founding fathers I doubt that there has been any Biblical thought put into it.) b) Why would a state (and the people) who proclaim to want a division between God and state rely on the Bible as its source for developing a rule of morality? c) The Old testament rules were given at a time prior to Jesus incarnation--Christ is the fullness of the Law and the Prophets: He has established a reign of justice higher than the Mosiac Law (which could have worked perfectly if not by the myriad of circumventions). d) For the state to use one verse from the Bible to establish capital punishment it would have to stop circumventing God's commandments: (not kill, not lie, not cheat, not oppress, not support evil, not collaborate with evil, be merciful, love...). God Bless! Angel |

6 | Is this verse pro capital punishment? | Gen 9:5 | Rowdy | 122827
I've read these last few posts and thought I'd throw in my two cents' worth. I do believe very strongly in capital punishment just like I believe spanking needs to be an available tool to every good and loving parent. I don't think there is a specific verse in the Bible that actually endorses or commands the former but of course we do have God's encouragement "not to spare the rod" for the latter. In my opinion, nations have to come to their own way of handling criminals who show no respect for authority as vested by that nation in their officials. If a society such as England can conduct their way of life with policemen without guns, it does seem that way of life could spread. But alas we have such incredible variety of lifestyles across our world, it's not practical to even expect that to come to pass. However, we do know that Paul did give God's endorsement on the nations of the world and the way they govern their country and its citizens, see Romans. So each of us must learn God's Will as best we can, some with the Bible and some without. Nevertheless we know we'll all be judged by how well we listen to God, whether it from His Word, our Bibles or whether we listen to the God installed conscience within all of us. The rest, including whether or not to provide for capital punishment is a matter left for those with a much higher pay-grade and position in life than you and I. Hope this helps and God bless. --Rowdy |
