Noah cursed his son Ham because of the disrespect he showed him, his own father, by telling his brothers about his nakedness. He should have responded as Japheth and Shem did, not even looking on his condition but walking backwards to cover him with a garment (Gen 9:23). Noah was the spokesman of God at that point in history, the human agent through whom God's will was done to preserve the human race. He knew that Ham had brought the very sin of the world that had been destroyed, disrespect to authority (including the authority of conscience within each man and woman, which led to the gross evils of Gen 6:11-13), into the cleansed world they were to repopulate. Ham knew what a great man his father was (Gen 6:8-10) and should have covered his failings, not broadcast them. His curse of servitude was to do a work in Ham's heart, twice noted as the father of Canaan (in Gen 9:18 and 22) upon whom the curse literally fell (verses 25-27). The hard labor was to produce the same respect in his and his offspring's hearts that was in his brothers' hearts, who were blessed (verses 26-27). Hence this curse was remedial, not vindictive. | ||||||
