Hank The question was how old was Noah when he began building the ark. Since you, proved Noah was 600 years old upon entry into the ark we then must go back to Gen. 6:3. Here God says His sprit will strive with men for another 120 years we then see God's call to Noah. Most experts assume these event happened simultaneously and that Noah started building the Ark immediately so this would place the beginning of construction 120 years before Noah entered it. That at would make Noah 480 years old when he started construction on the Ark. Noah apparently then worked on it 20 years before his sons were born and another 100 years after for a total of 120 years making him 600 years old when he entered it. EdB |

EdB: Your interpretation may be right, but there are problems with fixing the exact date that Noah began work on the ark. With Gen.6:3, the verse seems to announce that the period of grace between God's declaration of judgment and its arrival would be 120 years, but this does not prove conclusively that Noah began immediately to construct the ark. The reason I give for this view is, when looking at the following verses, the context may well lead us to arrive at a different conclusion. In v.8 we are told that Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord; in v.10, that Noah became the father of three sons; and in v.14 God commands Noah to build the ark. Now if these verses are given in chronological sequence, then the actual construction did not begin until after Noah's sons were born, and they were not born until Noah had attained the age of 500 (Gen.5:32) and Noah was 600 when the flood came. Therefore, if this sequence of events is valid, the actual construction time was somewhat less than 100 years. The fact is, we really don't know for sure just how long Noah was engaged in carrying out God's command to build the ark, but we do know that he did, and that the ark weathered the storm, and that had Noah not obeyed God and built an ark, and a good one at that, we wouldn't be here talking about it! --Hank

Hank I agree! As I stated there were assumations made. "Most experts assume these event happened simultaneously and that Noah started building the Ark immediately so this would place the beginning of construction 120 years before Noah entered it." In any case he was younger than 600 and somewhere between 480 and 600 when he began building the Ark. I would hate to embark on such a task and I'm only 55 :-) EdB |

Me too, Ed! And, besides, where would we go for wood (gopher wood)? Even Wal-Mart quit selling gopher wood about three years ago, as I recall. --Hank
