Jesus likened the time of “the presence of the Son of man” to “the days of Noah.” (Matthew 24:37) Noah and his three sons had a specific work to accomplish before the Flood. It involved building a gigantic ark and preaching. (Genesis 6:13-16; 2 Peter 2:5) When Jehovah gave instructions about the building of the ark, Noah’s sons were apparently already married. (Genesis 6:18) We do not know exactly how long it took to build the ark, but it seems likely that it took several decades. | ||||||

I was studying the Bible and realized that it seemed to be saying the Ark was an ocean going reed boat. The ancient Sumerians were experts at these boats and could have built it in a few months. Greentwiga |

Greentwiga, What we know about the building of the ark is found in Gen. 6. The time frame can be pieced together by backing out dates. It was 100 years in building (Gen. 5:32; 7:6). I hope this helps. BradK |

Hi Brad, Couldn't it have been 120 years since the Bible doesn’t have to be progressive? Genesis 6:3 And the Lord said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years. Once man’s flesh is destroyed his residence on this earth ceases. Man’s soul is eternal but his flesh subjects him to an earthy state. By God sending the flood, 120 years from this pronouncement, He would destroy man’s flesh and commit man's soul to an imprisonment. 1 Peter 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. Many try to say that the verse in Gen. says that a person can only live to be 120 years old, which has been proven false because people have lived longer then that and God doesn’t make mistakes. It’s only several verses late that God tells Noah how to prepare the ark as the provision to escape the flood. I personally think, as result, Noah was 120 years building the ark. CDBJ |

Hi CDBJ, Yes, you could be right. I wasn't being "exact" with the 100 year figure, but yes, somewhere in the 100- 120 year range is reasonable:-) I've taken it that Noah preached for 120 years based on Gen. 6:3 and the 1 Peter passage. BradK |

Hi Brad, That being the case, you stated, “I've taken it that Noah preached for 120 years based on Gen. 6:3”. Why would Noah put off starting the ark if he had faith and believed in what God had told him? I think he would have acted on what he believed and started on the ark ASAP. Faith with out works is dead! Ha Noah, why are you building the big boat;-----------------------------, rain, what is rain and why? “Noah, you have to be half nuts to believe that”. 1 Peter 3:20 Which sometime were disobedient, when once the longsuffering of God waited in the days of Noah, while the ark was a preparing, wherein few, that is, eight souls were saved by water. What destroyed them, the unbelievers by water, lifted Noah, since he was in the ark of safety. It’s just like it will be when Christ returns, His coming will save the believers and destroy those that are left on the earth and the believers, likewise, will be in the ark of safety, Christ. 2 Thes. 1:10 When he shall come to be glorified in his saints, and to be admired in all them that believe (because our testimony among you was believed) in that day. Genesis 7:12-13 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights. [13] In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons with them, into the ark; Have a great day, CDBJ |

HI CDBJ, I'm sorry, I didn't mean to hint there was any delay! Noah acted on faith (Heb. 11:7) in building the ark and preached unsuccessfully for 120 years. We're in agreeement:-) C.H. Spurgeon notes that, "Furthermore, Noah believed what seemed highly improbable, if not absolutely impossible. There was no sea where Noah laid the keel of his ark: I do not even know that there was a river there. He was to prepare a sea-going vessel, and construct it on dry land. How could water be brought there to float it? O mad old man! how canst thou play the fool on so huge a scale as to build a three-decked vessel of vast dimensions where no waters can ever come? Yet he was bidden of the Lord to do it, and he waspersuaded that the Lord’s command involved no blunder. The floods would fill the valley, rise up the hills, and prevail above the tops of the mountains. He believed all this, although it did seem an unlikely thing. That faith which believes in the probable is anybody’s faith: publicans and sinners can so believe. The faith which believes that which is barely possible is in better form; but that faith which cares nothing for probability or possibility, but rests alone in the Word of the Lord, is the faith of God’s elect. God deserves such faith, “for with God all things are possible.” Not probability, but certainty, is the groundwork of faith when God has spoken. Noah believed firmly, and therefore prepared his ship on dry land, quite as cheerfully as he would have built it by the sea." Further, regarding his preaching "Note well, that Noah believed alone, and preached on though none followed him. There were no other believers, if you except his wife and his sons and daughters. There were eight in all; but I am afraid that some of these rather believed in father Noah than in the living God. Noah shone as a lone star. He stood like yonder solitary column in the midst of a ruined temple. He believed with an unbuttressed faith. But how would you fare if you were alone, or were surrounded by those who called you a fool for believing in the Lord? To dwell where everybody is sceptical is as injurious to faith as for a man to live where the yellow fever is raging. To have your faith pulled to pieces, and held up to ridicule, is an ordeal which some cannot stand. What if you should be like Noah, a preacher of righteousness; how stern the duty of being a solitary witness! He preached for one hundred and twenty years, and at the end of it not one person was ready to go with him into the ark." Speaking the Truth in Love, BradK |

Hi Brad, With regards to your comment, in part, “There were eight in all; but I am afraid that some of these rather believed in father Noah than in the living God.” I had one of my daughter come to me one day, she was in her thirties, and asks me, “Dad, what do we believe”. I told her that I didn’t have a clue what she believed but I know what I believe and God doesn’t have any grandchildren. That really started her thinking, to say the least, and now she is on the right track and has a personal relationship with the Lord! Matthew 7:22-23 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? [23] And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity. It’s not what we know that matters, but Who we know that counts! Brad, I hope you have a great Christmas, and isn’t it fantastic having a personal living relationship with Jesus! First hand experience can’t be beat; 1 John 5:10 (A) He that believeth on the Son of God hath the witness in himself: CDBJ |
