1 | Did God really want animal sacrifices? | Gen 4:4 | benjamite | 37702
Did you say animal sacrifice? How about this verse? (Another question - where do the skins of Genesis 3:21 come from?) Also, Obedience is better than sacrifice, it is true. However the Bible clearly states that there is none who is righteous (Romans 3:10). All have fallen short of God's glory. Read Leviticus 1, note that the first verse says that the LORD is telling Moses about the sacrifices (the proper way to do it). I hope this helps, Benjamite |

2 | Gifts to God or substitutes for sin? | Gen 4:4 | robust | 37706
By the time we get to Leviticus, we are reading about "sin sacrifices" and the "blood being the life". This seems to imply substituting the guiltless animal for a man's sin. In Gen 4 we seem to be reading about offerings as gifts to God. Where has the change taken place, if at all? |

3 | Gifts to God or substitutes for sin? | Gen 4:4 | How big is your God | 37710
In Genesis it talks about offerings like that because there was no "law" instituted. Leviticus is where God told man what he must do to atone for his sin, but didn't negate other offerings. there is mention of other offerings apart from the sacrifice for sin, e.g. thanks, peace, wave, burnt, freewill, firstfruits. There are different offerings (or sacrifices: it is always a sacrifice of something that they owned) for different reasons, some as sin substitutes(which pointed to the Messiah as the ultimate sin offering) or as firstfruits (which was the case with Cain and Abel). The change has been an awareness of the Law so that awareness of sin might also occur. |
