Context ... Genesis 49:1-28 (3-4) ... broken22, Greetings NASB Genesis 49:3 "Reuben, you are my firstborn; My might and the beginning of my strength, Preeminent in dignity and preeminent in power. AMPLIFIED Genesis 49:3 Reuben, you are my firstborn, my might, the beginning (the firstfruits) of my manly strength and vigor; [your birthright gave you] the preeminence in dignity and the preeminence in power. This is when Jacob is blessing his sons. Verses 3-4 are about Rueben. In verse 4, he talks about: -Uncontrolled as water ... which points out that his descendenats couldn't make decisions (Jud 5:15-16). -not have preeminence ... which would of been his natural right -Because you went up to your father's bed; Then you defiled it -- he went up to my couch .. is the reason.
