1 | Context of Joseph Story? | Gen 47:19 | Just Read Mark | 135796
Slavery and Citizenship. I remember reading in a course in "The History of Women" that a form of "slavery" was one of the most progressive features of Egyptian society. All citizen's were required to do periodic hard labour --- and this included men and women. The end result of this was (not only magnificent building programs, but...) a high status for women in the society. They enjoyed both the responsibilities and benefits of citizenship. Could this universal slavery/citizenship date from the time of Joseph? That course was 10 years ago, and vague in my mind --- does anyone know this historical context might fit with the story? |

2 | Context of Joseph Story? | Gen 47:19 | EdB | 135819
Just Read Mark This was the building period (Ramses) however the idea everyone is was forced into slavery is effort to explain the amazing feats that were accomplished in this time period. It may very well be true but the jury is still out on it. Some have called it a volunteer effort that the people got involved with since the workers were well feed and by then most of the people had sold everything. In any case the situation with Joseph and the Egyptians is not that much different that what Americans do today put themselves into so much debt they are forced to work for others. The Bible tells us in Proverbs 22:7 The rich rules over the poor, And the borrower is servant to the lender. EdB |
