1 | Egyptian racism? | Gen 43:32 | Searcher56 | 11423
Nolan, Maybe Tow'ebah (Strong's 08441) is the word in Hebrew. It is used in "ritual" or "ethical" sense. The Jews did not go into see Pilate, because they wanted to eat the Passover. Some early Christians did not eat idol meat, much less go into the pagan temples for a sound reason on their part. However, thru history, we have seen "ritual" or "ethical" reasons for doing horrible things to others. Shepherds are considered second-class citizens by some. In the Old West, the ranchers did, even tho the sheep provided clothes and food. Steve |

2 | Egyptian racism? | Gen 43:32 | Makarios | 11460
Thank you Steve for doing some research and coming up with such a thoughtful answer! Zondervan's NASB Study Bible states, "The taboo was probably based on ritual or religious reasons (Ex 8:26), unlike the Egyptian refusal to associate with shepherds (46:34), which was probably based on social custom." "43:32 An important cultural feature of life in the Middle East in this period was the rule insisting that food be shared only with members of one’s own tribe or people." (Cambridge Annotated Study Bible) "place by himself: Joseph maintained his disguise, so he followed the Egyptian custom of eating at a table separate from the Hebrews. abomination: This word can indicate the strongest revulsion, something that might cause physical illness (see 46:34). The Egyptians might have been repulsed by bodily hair." (Nelson NKJV Study Bible) "43:32 The Egyptians would not eat with the Hebrews, and Joseph did not violate this custom (cf. 46:34)." (Ryrie Study Bible) These explanations are interesting in light of God's plan for His people. Nolan |
