1 | The serpents curse | Gen 3:15 | her ring | 175395 | ||
Hi everyone - I am new to the forum. Sadly, I do not have much bible study background - most of what I know was taught second hand - something I am determined to change. Please forgive any ignorance on my part.. It is easier for me to ask these questions in this type of setting than in a study class - hopefully, that too will change in time... Could someone help me to better understand Gen 3:15. Where it talks about offspring... that throws me. Does the devil produce offspring in the same way Eve produces offspring? Thanks. |

Hello her ring, Welcome to the Forum! Your question in regards to Gen. 3:15 is what is commonly referred to as the PROTEVANGELIUM. This is accepted by most as the first hint of the Gospel- that there would be a Savior. Tyndales Bible Dictionary gives this definition that may be of help: "The word means first (protos) gospel (evangelion). Theologians have used the word in reference to the message of redemption God spoke after the fall of man. Speaking to Satan (embodied in a serpent), God said, “From now on, you and the woman will be enemies, and your offspring and her offspring will be enemies. He will crush your head, and you will strike his heel” (Gn 3:15, nlt). In the protevangelium we have the protorevelation of the humanity (her offspring) and the divinity (crushing the head of serpent) of the great Deliverer. In this proclamation, God promises a Deliverer who will destroy Satan in an ordeal in which he himself will suffer. This refers to Jesus’ death on the cross. In suffering that death, Jesus defeated him who had the power of death, the devil (Heb 2:14). The devil (Satan) is a created being along with his demons. They're fallen angels and there does not appear to be any scriptural support to indicate that they procreate (Have offspring). I hope this will help, BradK |

That is an excellent question. I agree with BradK in that there appears to be no evidence that angels can procreate. If they could, then presumably God could have become an angel and redeemed the race of angels as well. Yet, this appears to be reserved to the race of mankind. I think it is proper to acknowledge that God did not give us a great deal of knowledge about angels. Certainly what He has revealed about Himself is infinitely more important. It seems, though, that there is a distinction in how terms could apply to different things. That Jesus is called the Son of God does not mean that God the Father had relations with God the Mother who then gave birth to God the Son. This is unthinkable for many reasons, and it's absurd because we are applying human constraints to deity. The Sonship of Christ is eternal. He never came into existence. He is, has always been, and always will be (Heb. 13:8, Rev. 1:8). By the same token, it would seem improper to ascribe human characteristics to angels. It appears likely that the "Seed" of Satan is referring to the host of other angels that followed him in his rebellion. Interestingly enough, there is a scene in "The Passion of the Christ" by Mel Gibson that likely refers to that passage. You may recall when the "Satan" figure is peering at Christ from among the crowd while carrying a young demonic-looking child with him. I think that is wholly inaccurate, but it's at least intriguing. I hope this helps. I wish you success in your quest to understand the Bible better. God bless you. |
