1 | The keeper of man as an abomination... | Gen 28:15 | EdB | 123836
I think what you refering to is Cain's response to God when asked where was Abel. Genesis 4:9 Then the Lord said to Cain, "Where is Abel your brother?" And he said, "I do not know. Am I my brother's keeper?" edb |

I was just reading this thread and found it to be interesting. I noticed you didn't really complete the line of thought you started with this post. So this line of reasoning begs the question: ARE we indeed our brother's or sister's keeper? I don't really see how we could consider this question from God, Creator of the Universe to be rhetorical. I'll wait for your response and then sumit my opinion. I would humbly suggest Ja 5:13-18 could be included in this discussion. What do you think? Blessings to you. Country Girl |

3 | Am I my brother's keeper? | Gen 28:15 | EdB | 123911
Country Girl I didn't have any particular line of thought in my response. The person that submitted the question asked about a quote and a possible reference to it. I was merely supplying a possible reference. As to your question, "Are we indeed our brother's keeper?" (I see no reason to include sister here since that term is already implied both here and in the scripture and I hope our beloved female forum members are secure enough with their gender to accept that) Now to the question. I think we have a responsibility to preach the gospel and share our testimony. Jesus called us to be His witness Acts 1:8 and Matthew 28:18-20. I also believe we need to keep our brothers in prayer. To offer intercession as we see Paul give the example. Romans 15:30-32; 2 Cor. 1:11; Ephes. 6:19-20; 1 Thes. 5:25; 2 Thes. 3:1; Hebrews 13:18 and as you mentioned in James 5:13-13 However our trust, our faith, our confidence, our dependence, what we rely on, what we look to, where our hope is should not be in our brothers nor theirs in us, but rather all of this should be focused on Christ Jesus. So while we are to love our neighbor as ourselves and do unto him as we would have done unto us, each of us are responsible for our own relationship with Christ. In other words each of us must develop and individual relationship with Christ to assure our salvation, hear His voice for our direction and comfort and have confidence in the Friend that sticks closer than a brother. We have no need of an earthly keeper if we have a heavenly one that is never slack in His keeping. I hope that answers you question. If not let me know. EdB |

4 | Am I my brother's keeper? | Gen 28:15 | Country Girl | 123916
Have you ever inserted the words "one another" into the Word Search to come up with all the associated scriptures on the subject? I just did and there are dozens of such scriptures in the NT alone. It seems the Bible puts a tremendous emphasis on our relationship with our fellow christians here on earth. As a matter of fact, I believe John put so much emphasis on it, that we can't even hope to go to Heaven unless we're in fellowship with our brethren at least as much as it is possible with our direct input into that fellowship. (1 Jn 1 and 2) So you see, we can't be just satisfied that we have a good vertical relationship with God our Father. We must also strive for a balanced, horizontal relationship with our christian family here on earth. Yes, I'm very much afraid God does expect a positive answer to his question to Cain. For He does indeed expect us to be our brother's keeper. No, I'm not saying we must be ultimately responsible for our brother's sins UNLESS we are the direct cause, like our drinking alcohol in front of him when we know he has a weakness. But I am saying that God wants us to learn to truly love our fellow man, and most especially our fellow christian enough to check on them now and again. Encourage them, love on them and ocassionally chastise them when they really need it. We should see this relationship like blood brothers of the same earthly father, only better and closer for we all have the same eternal Father. For scriptures, I can only cite the ones already cited before. You probably know them better than I do. Blessings to you. Country Girl |
