How did Jacob also manage to steal Esau's birthright (Genesis 25:29-34)? You can read in verse 27 how Esau grew up to become a skillful hunter, and so he probably spent most of his time in the countryside. And Esau gave up his birthright (a double inheritence plus the honor of leading the family one day) for some stew. Esau showed the ability to make decisions quickly and poorly. In 27:5, Esau leaves for the open country. Rebekah then plots with Jacob to get some game, stew it up, and steal the blessing. The whole plan was to be carried out in secrecy, and it was. Esau, who might have been many miles away, was oblivious. Jacob exited the tent just as Esau got back (Gen 27:30). Also, God was at work in the situation, since it had been foretold that Jacob would rule over his brother Esau (Gen 25:23). Esau is also mentioned in Malachi 1:2-3, Romans 9:13, and Hebrews 12:16-17 [in all these verses, Esau is portrayed in a negative light]. Sandman |
