I've been asking several people this questions and it seems like no one really knows. What was the purpose for circumcision? Why did God initiate this procedure? What was its meaning? Sean |

2 | What was the purpose of circumcision? | Gen 17:10 | DocTrinsograce | 223302
Dear Sean, Welcome to the forum! Circumcision is the sign of the Abrahamic Covenant (see Genesis 17). It is an external mark of consecration to Abraham and his descendants. You might be interested in a sermon on this practice by Charles Spurgeon: http://www.spurgeon.org/sermons/0845.htm In Him, Doc |

3 | What was the purpose of circumcision? | Gen 17:10 | seanD | 223303
Doc, Wow, that was quick. Thanks. I'll read Spurgeon's sermon, but also wanted to know why circumcision. Was there a reason for this specific act as apposed to something else. I get the rainbow in its connection to rain. Or is the specific type of sign irrelevant? Sean |

4 | What was the purpose of circumcision? | Gen 17:10 | DocTrinsograce | 223304
Hi, Sean... I would say that anything that God does is, by definition, relevant. Whether we understand that relevance is another matter. I have said on the forum before, that what, where, when, who and even how questions are a lot easier to answer. You see, why questions delve into the roots of purpose and intention. Often the Bible does not tell us why. When the Scripture does not speak to a thing, then we must be satisfied (Deuteronomy 29:29). We might speculate about the symbolism of circumcision -- being careful not to be overly dogmatic on the point. Perhaps it is an act of separation from the practices of the world. Also, we see spiritual implications (see Deuteronomy 10:16; 30:6; Jeremiah 4:4; Romans 2:28-29). I apologize for not being able to give a more certain answer to your question. In Him, Doc |
