Two basic views about the 430 years 'There are two basic views about the 430 years mentioned in this verse. '(1) There are 430 years from Genesis 15 to Exodus 20 (e.g., 215 years from Abraham to the captivity, and 215 years from the captivity to Sinai). However, these dates do not fit with a conservative chronology (e.g., Abraham was c. 2,000 BC, and the Exodus was c. 1446 BC; Also the captivity was prophesied to be 400 years in Genesis 15: 13, not 215 years) '(2) There are 430 years from Genesis 46 to Exodus 20. In Genesis 46 Jacob receives the last confirmation of the Abrahamic covenant and then goes into Egypt as one of the patriarchs c. 1876 BC. Acts 7:6, and Genesis 15:13-16 both describe 400 years of captivity. Perhaps they are using rounded numbers. Or perhaps from the final giving of the promise to Abraham's descendant, Jacob, in the Land until the Exodus is 430 years. This would make the captivity proper 400 years. 1 Chronicles 7:20-21 describes ten generations from Joseph to Joshua. It would take 400 years to grow from 70 to 2-3 million. '8 This date emphasizes the literal interpretation of the biblical numbers in Exodus 12:40 ("Now the time that the sons of Israel lived in Egypt was four hundred and thirty years"), Judges 11:26 ("While Israel lived in Heshbon and its villages, and in Aroer and its villages, and in all the cities that are on the banks of the Arnon, three hundred years, why did you not recover them within that time?") and 1 Kings 6:1 ("Now it came about in the four hundred and eightieth year after the sons of Israel came out of the land of Egypt, in the fourth year of Solomon's reign over Israel, in the month of Ziv which is the second month, that he began to build the house of the Lord"). 'Hill and Walton offer the following arguments for an early date (A Survey of the Old Testament, 108):...' 2 | Israel in Egypt 430 yrs? | Gen 15:13 | Searcher56 | 172634 | ||
I thought for my life Israel was in Egypt for 400 (or 430) years. Then after Jim Estes posted, I studied the Bible. We read “your descendants will be strangers in a country not their own, and they will be enslaved and mistreated four hundred years” (Gen 15:13, Act 7:6). What does that mean? We know Abraham was an alien and a stranger (Gen 23:4). The only land we know he bought was the burial site for Sarah, later himself and others (Gen 49:31, 50:13). We know Isaac was a stranger (Gen 28:4), well as Jacob (Gen 37:1). Exodus 6:2-4 affirms the fact they were strangers … verse 5 tells about being enslaved and mistreated, but that wasn’t for the 400 years. Psalm 105:11-12 also proves they strangers in the land of Canaan, not (just) Egypt. In the King James Version, Exodus 12:40 says, “Now the sojourning of the children of Israel, who dwelt in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years”. This began when Abram/ Abraham left Ur (Gen 11:31-32, Act 7:2), not when they arrived in Egypt. Plus, the 400 years (Gen 15:13, Act 7:6), is not consistent with 430. The Law was introduced 430 years after the promises were made (Gal 3:16-17). The 30 year difference is from the time of the promise/ covenant (Gen 12:1-3) and the birth of Isaac (Gen 21:3). When Jacob and his family moved to Egypt, his son Levi and his grandson Kohath, were included (Gen 46:2-11). Kohath lived 133 years (Exo. 6:18), and his son, Amram lived 137 years (Exo. 6:20), whose son Moses was 80 (Exo 7:7) when he spoke to Pharaoh. The longest possible period would be 350 years (133 plus137 plus 80), which is unlikely. This fits “In the fourth generation your descendants will come back here” (Gen 15:16). More likely, Israel spent 210 years in Egypt, with less than 139 years in slavery, based on when Joseph died. I doubt the next king didn’t know about him – since he saw Joesph. The year is based on when Adam was created … or year from Adam. Year – Event 1948 – Abraham was born (notice the year and think about Israel today) 2018 – At 70, God told Abram/ Abraham to leave Ur. 430 years of sojourning begins (Gen 11:31-32, Exo 12:40-41, Act 7:2). 2023 – At 75, God made initial covenant and he left Haran (Gen 12:1-6). 2033 – At 85, God made another covenant with him (Gen 15). 2034 – At 86, Ishmael was born to him (Gen 16:16). 2048 – At 100, Isaac born was born to him (Gen 21:5) - 400 years of being strangers begins. 2108 – Jacob and Esau born to Isaac at 60 (Gen 25:26). 2238 – Jacob was 130 years old when he moved his family to Egypt (Gen 47:28), 2309 – Joseph died at 110 (Gen 50:22) … soon after “a new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph” (Exo 1:8). 2448 – Exodus/ Law given (Exo 13:17ff). … 430 years after Abraham’s sojourn begin … 400 years after Abraham’s descendants were strangers … 210 years after Jacob and his family arrived … 139 years in max slavery, based on when Joseph died When I studied this, my mind is confused (still is) why the sojourning (430 years) and being strangers (400 years) end when they left Egypt (Exo 13:17) and not conquered Jericho (Jos 5:13ff), if not Canaan when settled and the land distributed (Jos 14:1ff). Joshua 24:28 says, “Then Joshua sent the people away, each to his own inheritance”. |

Wow, Searcher! That's really interesting! I have seen the 210 year dating, but without any explanation, and I could not figure out how they came up with it. I'm going to examine this more later, but it sure looks like you've got something here! Way Cool! Love in Christ, mark |

The key to understanding the 400 years and 430 years can be found in Galatians 3:16-17. The Law, as stated in verse 17, began 430 years after the covenant. The Law was given shortly after the exodus. Exodus 12:41 states: “At the end of the 430 years, even that very day, all the hosts of the Lord went out of Egypt.” The exodus out of Egypt occurred on the day of the Passover, exactly 430 years after an important event and 400 years after another. What were these events? We know from Gal. 3:17 the 430 years was from the time of the covenant. But which covenant, at which time? Gal. 3:16 states: “Now the promises were decreed and made to Abraham and his Seed. He does not say, And to seeds, as if referring to many persons, but, And to your Seed, obviously referring to one individual, Who is Christ.” The term “Seed” as used in this context, meaning Jesus Christ, is not found until Gen. 22: 18: “And in your Seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed and bless themselves, because you have heard and obeyed My voice.” What had Abraham heard and obeyed? This was right after Abraham had shown his intent to offer Isaac as a burnt offering to the Lord. However, Isaac was passed over. 430 years later the Israelites were passed over in Egypt. Later, again on the anniversary of this date, Christ became our Passover Lamb. So what happened 30 years later? The birth of Jacob-Israel, who would be a stranger dwelling as a temporary resident in Canaan and later in Egypt, where his descendants (known by his name) would be mistreated and enslaved. Total time in Egypt 270 years. This also means that Isaac was 30 years old when he was offered. A “young man” (Gen 22:5) who died when he was 180 years old (Gen 35:29). According to my calculations, the Israelites lived in Egypt for 216 years after the dead of Joseph. So, it very well could be that they were enslaved for 210 years. |
