According to Josephus ("Antiquities of the Jews" chapter 4), Noah and his family came down out of the mountains to the plain of Shinar. He goes on to say that "God also commanded them to send colonies abroad, for the thorough peopling of the earth, that they might not raise seditions among themselves, but might cultivate a great part of the earth, and enjoy its fruits after a plentiful manner." However, they began to believe that their success was attributable to their own efforts. Even worse, they began to attribute evil to God by speculating that if they dispersed it would make it easier for God to oppress them. Josephus tells us that Nimrod did everything in his power to promulgate these views. He also was responsible for initiating a coup, replacing the existing government with a tyranny. He used the project of constructing the tower in order to unite the people further in their dependence on him, and their rebellion against the Lord. Josephus continues with "they built a tower, neither sparing any pains, nor being in any degree negligent about the work: and, by reason of the multitude of hands employed in it, it grew very high, sooner than any one could expect; but the thickness of it was so great, and it was so strongly built, that thereby its great height seemed, upon the view, to be less than it really was. It was built of burnt brick, cemented together with mortar, made of bitumen, that it might not be liable to admit water." In other words, they built this tall, water-proof tower as a place to flee, if God should bring judgment upon them as He had done in the deluge. Isn't that so like man? We tend to think so highly of ourselves that we even imagine we can thwart the hand of God! How childish we are! I thought that my brothers and sisters in the forum might find this interesting.
