Verse 11. Great was the company of those that published it. hammebasseroth tsaba rab; "Of the female preachers there was a great host." Such is the literal translation of this passage; the reader may make of it what he pleases. Some think it refers to the women who, with music, songs, and dances, celebrated the victories of the Israelites over their enemies. But the publication of good news, or of any joyful event, belonged to the women. It was they who announced it to the people at large; and to this universal custom, which prevails to the present day, the psalmist alludes. See this established in Clarke's note on "Isa 40:9". This is taken from Adam Clark Commentary So I do think the verse has something to offer to the women of and to the Body of Christ as whole today. This is a foundational verse for a talk I am giving in a few weeks. You would be surprized as to how many verses (both OT and NT) that connect to the thought of this verse implication. I think when we do a word study and pay attention to the root, gender, and tense we discover a whole new depth to much of GOD's Word. It is so exciting! |

Hi, Cuddle... Always take care with Adam Clarke. Although I've found him to differ substantively from sound Biblical doctrine, he has one saving grace at least in this comment from Charles Hadon Spurgeon to his seminarians: "Adam Clarke is the great annotator of our Wesleyan friends; and they have no reason to be ashamed of him, for he takes rank among the chief of expositors. His mind was evidently fascinated by the singularities of learning, and hence his commentary is rather too much of an old curiosity shop, but it is filled with valuable rarities, such as none but a great man could have collected. Like Gill, he is one sided... only in the opposite direction to our friend the Baptist... If you have a copy of Adam Clarke, and exercise discretion in reading it, you will derive immense advantage from it, for frequently by a sort of side light he brings out the meaning of the text in an astonishingly novel manner. I do not wonder that Adam Clarke still stands, notwithstanding his peculiarities, a prince among commentators." As the Scripture assures us there is safety in a multitude of counselors, so I'd encourage you to be certain you have a concensus when using commentators. In this way you will increase grace to the blessing of your listeners. In Him, Doc |
