2 | Is this the Holy Spirit of the NT? | Ps 51:11 | Makarios | 12065 | ||
"Is this the Holy Spirit of the NT?" Yes, this is the same Holy Spirit. "If so can He be taken away from us today?" Yes, I believe that He can if we willfully reject Christ. However, if we are truly saved, then we can be assured that the Holy Spirit will remain with us (we cannot willfully reject Christ if we are truly saved). "Was David's fear realistic?" I believe that David was facing the consequences of his sin already by pleading with God to restore His relationship with him. He was already feeling the brokenness of what had been a relationship of unity with God, since he followed after God's own heart in the past. "What is the difference of the function of the Holy Spirit between the OT and NT?" Another good question! I had to use the help of Ryrie here.. "V. THE WORK OF THE SPIRIT IN THE OT A. In Creation. The Spirit gave to the creation: 1. Life (Ps. 104:30; Job 33:4). 2. Order (Isa. 40:12; Job 26:13). 3. Adornment (Ps. 33:6; Job 26:13). 4. Preservation (Ps. 104:30). B. In Man. 1. Selective indwelling. a. The Spirit was in certain people in OT times (Gen. 41:38; Num. 27:18; Dan. 4:8; 5:11-14; 6:3). b. The Spirit came upon many (Judg. 3:10; 6:34; 11:29; 13:25; 1 Sam. 10:9-10; 16:13). c. The Spirit filled some (Ex. 31:3; 35:31). Thus His personal relationship to men in the OT was limited, for not all experienced His work nor was it necessarily permanent in each case (Ps. 51:11). 2. Enablement for service (especially in the construction of the Tabernacle, Ex. 31:3, but also in other instances, Judg. 14:6). 3. General restraint of sin (Gen. 6:3)." In the NT.. "VI. THE WORK OF THE SPIRIT IN REVELATION AND INSPIRATION A. Definitions. 1. Revelation means the disclosure of that which was previously unknown. Revelation concerns the material (i.e., what). 2. Inspiration* is God’s superintending of human authors so that, using their own individual personalities, they composed and recorded without error His revelation to man in the words of the original autographs. Inspiration concerns the manner (i.e., how). B. The Author of Revelation Is the Holy Spirit (2 Peter 1:21; cf. 2 Sam. 23:2; Ezek. 2:2; Mic. 3:8; Matt. 22:43; Acts 1:16; 4:25). C. The Means of Revelation. The Spirit used: 1. Spoken word (Ex. 19:9). 2. Dreams (Gen. 20; 31). 3. Visions (Isa. 6:1). 4. Written Word (John 14:26; 1 Cor. 2:13). 5. Christ. D. The Author of Inspiration Is the Spirit. 1. Of the OT (2 Sam. 23:2-3; 2 Tim. 3:16; Mark 12:36; Acts 1:16; 28:25; Heb. 3:7; 10:15-16). 2. Of the NT. a. NT inspiration was preauthenticated by Christ (John 14:26). b. It is asserted by the writers of the NT (1 Cor. 14:37; Gal. 1:7-8; 1 Thess. 4:2, 15; 2 Thess. 3:6, 12, 14). c. It is attested to by the apostles of each other’s writings (1 Tim. 5:18; 2 Peter 3:16). VII. THE WORK OF THE SPIRIT IN THE LIFE OF CHRIST A. In His Virgin Birth. The Spirit caused Christ’s conception in Mary’s womb (Luke 1:35). B. In His Life. 1. Christ was anointed by the Spirit (Luke 4:18; Acts 10:38). It occurred at His baptism but was not the same as baptism (John 1:32). Anointing meant empowering for service. 2. Christ was filled with the Spirit (Luke 4:1). 3. Christ was sealed with the Spirit (John 6:27). 4. Christ was led by the Spirit (Luke 4:1). 5. Christ was empowered by the Spirit (Matt. 12:28). C. In His Death (Heb. 9:14, and some use Rom. 1:4). D. In His Resurrection (1 Peter 3:18 possibly)." |
