1 | Take Your Holy Spirit from me? | Ps 51:11 | load | 166
A dear friend once admonished me to be careful when leading people (in worship) with the popular worship song "Create in me a clean heart". Can someone give me a good explanation that I might use regarding the idea (in this context) of God "taking His Spirit away"?
2 | Take Your Holy Spirit from me? | Ps 51:11 | kalos | 171
"No believer of the present Church Age need ever pray, 'Take not thy Holy Spirit from me'; for Christ promised His own that the Spirit would 'abide with you forever' (Jn. 14:16; compare Eph. 4:30). But it is always proper for the Christian to pray that he may be conformed to the conditions essential to the full ministry of the Spirit." (note at Ps. 51:11, New Scofield Reference Bible, 1967, Oxford University Press) "In the O.T. economy, the Holy Spirit was particularly related to service, rather than salvation...Here David is asking God not to take away his service as the anointed king of Israel..." 3 | Take Your Holy Spirit from me? | Ps 51:11 | zach† | 35066
kalos Scripture seems to make a difference between the Holy Spirit being "with you" "in you" and "upon you" John 14:17 Even the Spirit of truth; whom the world cannot receive, because it seeth him not, neither knoweth him: but ye know him; for he dwelleth WITH YOU, and shall be IN YOU. Acts 1:8 But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come UPON YOU: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth. So can we ask for an explanation of the difference? In Christ zach† |

4 | Take Your Holy Spirit from me? | Ps 51:11 | Ray | 60481
Hi zacht, I am sorry that you did not get a response to your question here. In case you did not get an answer in some other thread, I will address your question. I see no difference in who the Person, the Holy Spirit, is in each of the circumstances you mentioned. But you have a good point in showing that He was with us, is in us, and could even now come upon us. But He is the same Person and He is God. The difference that I am still exploring in my personal study is the difference between Holy Spirit and spirit. The difference is seen in this passage of Psalm 51. It talks of not taking "Thy Holy Spirit" from me, but it also talks of the "spirit". It talks of a steadfast spirit, verse 10. A willing spirit, verse 12. And a broken spirit, verse 17. The renewed steadfast spirit and the broken spirit (a contrite heart) are our spirits. But the third one, the one that sustains us is a willing spirit. In fact the NKJ calls this spirit a generous Spirit. My view of the passage right now is that it is talking of the gift of the spirit given without measure to us. The holy "spirit" given to us are the words of God. 2 Corinthians 3:5, "Not that we are adequate in ourselves to consider anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God, who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life...how shall the ministry of the Spirit/ fail to be even more with glory?" 2 Corinthians 3:18, "But we all, with unveiled face beholding as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, just as from the Lord, the Spirit/." John 6:68, "Simon Peter answered Him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You/ have words of eternal life." Jesus was asking the twelve in John 6:67 whether they wanted to go away. David in Psalm 51 was asking for a renewed spirit within him for he did not want to be cast away. Psalm 51:11b, "And do not take Thy Holy Spirit/ from me." John 10:28, "and I/ give eternal life to them, and they shall never perish;..." The slashes are of course mine for comparison of these verses. I wanted to show by these things that Jesus has the words of eternal life. We have to be concerned about spiritual things, things of holy spirit, so that we can know the Spirit. 2 Corinthians 4:15, "For all things are for your sakes, that the grace which is spreading to more and more people may cause the giving of thanks to about to the glory of God. Therefore do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our inner man is being RENEWED day by day." Psalm 51:10, "Create in me a clean heart, O God, And RENEW a steadfast spirit within me." From the heart, Ray |
