1 | Preaching to Yourself! | Ps 42:11 | Val | 217391
Dear Doc, very encouraging words. When I awake in the morning sometimes the first thing I say is "This is the day that the Lord has made, I will rejoice and be glad in it". A grateful heart is a sure way to conqueor the blues.
2 | Preaching to Yourself! | Ps 42:11 | DocTrinsograce | 217400
Dear Val, That is a good example. The old divines used to call this "discursive meditation" -- in addition to, but different from "systematic meditation." It is the idea of developing a habit of preaching the Word to yourself. The interesting thing about it, is that it can be triggered by various experiences around you. If you see a man carrying something heavy, you think "I once was under the burden of sin, but the Lord Jesus took upon Himself my sin!" When you see people entering the subway through the turn-styles, you think "Lord, I earnestly desire to enter the narrow way." When you see a house being built, you think, "The wise man builds his house upon the rock! The Lord is my sure foundation!" When you are feeling discouraged, you think "God is light and in Him is no darkness at all! This I know, and the Lord has given me this that my joy -- a joy that is independent of circumstance and simple emotion -- may be full and complete!" When you are happy, you think, "Eye hasn't seen, nor ear heard, nor has any man imagined what God has prepared for His own!" If you think about it, there are thousands of ways every day to do this! In Him, Doc |
