Hi, cpowell... Our Lord is praying the thirty-first Psalm. Then, as a voluntary act, He releases His human soul; i.e., He dies. English, later being influenced by the translation of the Bible, adopted the phrase "give up the ghost." It might have been an idiom in ancient Greek, as well, but I do not know this for a fact.
