In Rom 3:10-12, Paul was quoting Psalm 14:1-3. In v11, Paul says 'there is none that seek after God'. Is this quote in another passage of scripture? In v10, Paul says there is none righteous. Who is the generation of the righteous in Psalm 14:5? Thanks in advance to those who may respond... :) Abba Father Bless... |

Scripture ... Psa 14:2 - Rom 3:11, Psa 14:5 ... Greetings, When an OT passage is seen in the NT, it may not be an exact quote. One reason is that the OT source could be the Septuigant, which was a Greek translation. Paul also wrote in Greek. He and the Psalmist were both inspired by the Holy Spirit, as you know. The same thought is there in both places. Psalm 14:5 may be one generation in the future, or all who are righteous. Hope this helps, Searcher |

Hi Melanie, My own interpretation is that the generation of the righteous refers to believers. The true children of Abraham who were accounted righteous on the basis of faith. Rom 4:13 "For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith." John |

John, You said: "My own interpretation is that the generation of the righteous refers to believers. The true children of Abraham who were accounted righteous on the basis of faith. Rom 4:13 "For the promise to Abraham or to his descendants that he would be heir of the world was not through the Law, but through the righteousness of faith."" I think you are right on the money here. But if there is a generation of the rightoeus among the Jews, then also among the Gentiles since 3:9 lumps them together. Of course we also remember that Abraham was a Gentile and had Gentile offspring. But how would the faith of Abraham and his offspring be manifested other than by "the obedience of faith," and all this before the Law and any "works of the Law" were delivered? By grace to be sure, flowing from the atonement of Christ, the Lamb slain from the foundation of the world. But grace is a gift that, once accepted, produces a fruitful obedient faith, without "works of the Law," but with works of faith that manifests the righteousness of faith by God's grace in Christ. What do you think? Emmaus |

Hello emmaus, To be frank, I have not studied this issue specificaly, but my opinion rested on my overall conception of the bible as it deals with the subject of righteousness. I believe that Melanie posed this particular question to gain a clearer understanding of Romans 3:11. I had used that particular verse to dispel her of the notion that fallen mankind is in any way interested in seeking the God of the bible. I don't see how the term generation of the righteous can refer to anyone but the elect of the old testament. Whether it refers to them in general or to a particular portion of them, I do not know.
