1 | Old testament promises for today? | Ps 12:6 | gpaul0604 | 185363 | ||
In the Old Testament God made promises to His people such as Isaiah 41:10 So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand. 11 "All who rage against you will surely be ashamed and disgraced; those who oppose you will be as nothing and perish. 12 Though you search for your enemies, you will not find them. Those who wage war against you will be as nothing at all. Or. . . Joel 2:25 "I will repay you for the years the locusts have eaten—the great locust and the young locust,the other locusts and the locust swarm my great army that I sent among you. Although these promises applied to His children in the Old Testament, they are often quoted as applying to today as well, which gives many comfort. Now. . . If the law of the old testament no longer applies, wouldn't that also mean that the promises (Which are often given out of context) are no longer valid either? Thank you. |

Dear gpaul0604, You're right that one of the biggest problems in a sound interpretation of Scripture is failure to take into account the context of a passage (see post #158836). However, the principles of wherein God dealt with His people do not change. The requirements to obey Him apply to all human beings no matter when in time they live. However, much of the ceremonial requirements no longer apply since so much in redemptive history has been fulfilled by Christ (cf Hebrews 9 and elsewhere). (The same thing will occur with communion, for example, after the fulfillment spoken of in Revelation 19:7-9.) One thing is quite certain: with obedience to God blessing accrue, while disobedience always results in curses. Watch, therefore, for the context, then look to the fundamental principles. See what the passage says about the character of God, and see what it says about the character of men. In Him, Doc |
