kkharis23: How I love this question! There is in all the earth no pursuit more noble, more rewarding, or more blessed than reading and meditating upon God's holy word! There is no "right" way to begin reading the Bible. The main thing is to resolve to read and study it. But here are a few hints that I've picked up along the way that have been helpful to me. Begin in the New Testament, with a gospel account perhaps. The Gospel of John is a good place to begin. Then read the other three gospel accounts -- Matthew, Mark, and Luke. Then read Luke's sequel to his gospel, the Book of Acts. Go next to the short epistles -- Peter, James, Jude, and the three of John. Then read Paul's letters, beginning with the shorter ones and ending with Romans, easily the most profound of all his letters. Next, take up a systematic reading of the Old Testament. Begin with the beautiful and easy-to-read books of Ruth and Esther. Genesis is foundational to all the Bible. Exodus picks up where Genesis ends. After Exodus, read the books of Samuel and Kings. Then go back and read Numbers and Deuteronomy. Don't forget to read Job. Continue with the prophets and be sure to include a Psalm or a chapter from Proverbs in your daily readings. .......... Read from a clear, reliable translation. You could do far worse than Lockman's NASB, believe me. NASB is an excellent translation, clear and very accurate. Well, so much for my nickel's worth. These suggestions that I've laid down are merely guidelines dictated by my own personal tastes and ideas for approaching Scripture for the first time. They are not set in stone, and others may well have different, and better, suggestions for you. The main thing, as I said at the outset of this post, is to resolve to read and study God's word, seriously and systematically, not half-heartedly and randomly. And I'm so delighted that you have enough interest in reading the Bible to come on this Forum and ask for suggestions on how best to go about it. I rejoice that you have this interest and wish you every success possible in your wonderful new enterprise. If you are a Christian, be sure to pray before your readings and ask God to illumine His word for you. (See Psalm 119:18). If you are not a Christian, I pray that you will come to know Jesus Christ as your Lord and Savior. (See 2 Corinthians 6:2; Acts 4:12; John 3:16; Rev. 3:20; Acts 16:30,31) --Hank | ||||||
