Wow! I wasn't expecting such a quick response. The reason I asked for a reference is two fold. First, I did a search using my Bible software and I couldn't find any verse in any version of the Bible that says God can't look upon sin. Second, from a logical standpoint, He must be able to look upon sin or He wouldn't be able to see anything that happens in this world. If you find the reference, please let me know. I have seen the following verse used in support of the idea that God cannot look upon sin. Hab 1:13 Thou art of purer eyes than to behold evil, and canst not look on iniquity: wherefore lookest thou upon them that deal treacherously, and holdest thy tongue when the wicked devoureth the man that is more righteous than he? |

Greetings New Creature! Thanks for the input! Let's look at Hab. 1:13 and see if it supports the view that God cannot look on sin. First of all, we note that this verse if part of Habakkuk’s Second Complaint against God. It is not a didactic section, but a poetic section of Scripture. It is Habakkuk's address to God, not a teaching section about God. Secondly, we should note that in Hebrew poetry, the second line is usually a clarification or repetition of the thought in the first line. Thus, not looking upon sin would be the same as being unable to tolerate wrong. Yet, this is exactly what Habakkuk was accusing God of doing. He asks in the very same verse, "Why then do you tolerate the treacherous? Why are you silent while the wicked swallow up those more righteous than themselves?" So, all in all, I would stick with my original answer that God can see sin otherwise there would be little that He could see in this fallen world. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
