Yes it would violate her dignity. She was expected to present herself nude to the audience so the king could show off his ‘trophy’ wife. The interesting part of this was the blending of cultures. In the Meda-Persian culture which was consider less sophisticated, women were kept veiled. In the more western Mediterranean, which was, consider the more sophisticated culture it was common practice to display wives this way. King Ahasuerus was trying to show he wasn't the backward barbarian by demand his wife display herself. While the Meda-Persian culture was by far the force with be reckoned with it was allowing other cultures to shape its social behavior instead of the other way around. EdB |
