In the context of Nehemiah verse 17 gives us more insight, Neh 8:17 All the assembly of returned exiles made booths and dwelt in them; for since the days of Jeshua (Joshua) son of Nun up to that day, the Israelites had not done so. And there was very great rejoicing. It was a day of rejoicing and sadness, i.e., mixed emotions you might say. We see this sometimes at weddings, tears of joy. The Lord brought them back to the land. Trusting the Lord gives us joy because in Him we have hope and He gives us strength in the hard times if we rely on Him. Blessings - Val |

Hi, Daisymae... The focus is on the experience of the workers, not the Lord's experience. Nehemiah is speaking to the workers. J. Hudson Taylor wrote on this topic, "It is not for God’s glory that His service should be, or should appear to be, a toilsome slavery, wearing out the life and the joy of those engaged in it. On the contrary, the Lord’s people should always, with tell-tale faces, be unconsciously proclaiming that His service is a service of freedom, that the joy of the Lord is their strength, that He leads His own by right paths, and that He glorifies His own great Name in them, and through them continually. May the Lord give us all the joy of realizing that for His own Name’s sake, that for His own credit’s sake, He will renew our strength as we wait upon Him." In Him, Doc |
