Gbzones I would agree that you need the Holy Spirit to understand the passage of Revelation or any other passage. However, it would be wise to stop and consider that the theologians who were mentioned as having given commentary on the subject of Revelation took a tremendous amount of time doing the very thing you point out, praying to have the scriptures illuminated to them by the Holy Spirit. Many of them udoubtedly incorporate what the other scriptures would have to say about Revelation as that is part of writing good commentary. Not having studied it to as great a length, how do we then do we say that those who have studied such things at great length, have not arrived at the truth without studying both the Bible and their work at length to say such things of them? The studying of the various works of commentators is not about a confusion of interpretations, each one has taken the time to do the excursions into the arts of exegesis and hermeneutics to arrive at his conclusion. We should endeavor to do the same to the best of our abilities in both our own private study of Revelation and in reading their works. The criteria for determining the truth, as you call it, or the meaning, as I would call it, of Revelation should be a thorough examination of the scriptures to arrive at the meaning. I think the term truth is a little off the mark here as appplying that to the conclusions of these men, as all scripture is truth and studying it is the garnering of the meaning of it. What we try to do in studying it is to arrive at the meaning of that truth. I have a question for you, and this is not to foster ill will, nor is it for argumentation sake. What does Genesis have to do with interpreting Revelation other than to understand the fall? What other clues could one garner from Genesis that could possibly help us understand Revelation? It seems, though perhaps only to me, that Daniel would yeild more clues about Revelation than any other book. For your consideration. blessings abound, bowler |

I was not so much comentating on this or that author. But rather on the prevailing practice of purporting to comment but never being authorative.I still hold that it is the truth we need not its 'meaning'which is much weaker. The scriptures never say we arrive at a meaning but at the truth! Then when we know the truth we are made free to act!or are "made free." There a multitude of 'meanings' (if you will) that people arrive at as to the end times the rapture, the millenium pre post etall. I cannot see by the scripture why there should be so much confusion.Seeing as I said "when the Holy Spirit shall come HE will LEAD us into all truth" I would contend therefore that there is confusion as to the truth ,what is the truth!? is there a rapture when is the rapture what is the millenium who si the bride etc. So I dont know what these authors have written. But if they say different things on what criteria do you ascertain the truth? If you say by the Holy Spirit but at the same time you seem to sugest that they too are so led.if they are differenet how can it be seeign that God is not divided in His mind and the Spirit of God knowetrh the mind of God. I must conclude then that not all therefore speak the truth if they differ from what the Spirit of truth would not agree with. Now another snare is that 'YOU' will decide which 'meaning' is true.To do that puts you in the place and leaning upon your own understanding rather than trusting HIM who leadeth us into all truth. Now thew scriptures clearly teach that if the Spirit of truth abides in "you then you have no need of any to teach you"Now some take that to mean that nobodys going to teach them! I have the Spirit! That clearly is error seeign that in Ephesians God has given to the church teachers! What then does it mean? or what is the truth.(See how sharper(truth) it is?)Simply that even as the Spirit of truth has witnesed to your spirit that you are a child of God (presuming that a person is biblicly BORNagain)then He the Spirit of truth speaks of what is Christs. Thus will always witness to the truth and never to that which is not. Thus a truly biblicly BORNagain child of God who is seekign first the kingdom of God and HIS rightousness will always have the witness of the Spirit as to the truth. Thus even though he may not no why something is NOT the truth he will eb checked in his spirit not to embrace it."Thus by practice we learn good from evil"So it proves the scripture "that they who are LED by the Spirit of God are the sons of God." Thus we are LED to under stand and come to know the truth. For we cannot know the truth as God means us to know it by any other means for "the carnal man/mind cannot recive the things of God."(1cor?) Your remark 'having not studied it at great length (ourselves?)how do we then say that those who have ..........have not arrived at the truth'begs the question in whom is your faith? In HIm who leadeth or men who teacheth? For; if of a truth, they who teach are in truth Led by HIM as they MUST be ,if they also are to arrive at the truth and teach it.They will LEAD you even as they were so led themselves. Read again the letters of Paul, expecilay to romans and Hebrews; They are 'argumnents'Which if you follow the 'argument' you will arrive at the same conclusions as Paul has done. That is his objective! Thus even as he was so taught so he teaches! if that is not enough then I must direct you to the Lord HImself (John 8 etc)who said the words that I speak are not my own words but the Father who is in me He doeth the works. Moreover as the Father taught me so .. What i see the Father doing that do I. How do we Lead men to Christ? By the same way God led us . How is it therefore there IS so many 'opinions' as to the meanings of scripture but very little "knowldge of the truth"? For of a truth if a man KNOWS the truth as God woudl have us know it then of a certainty we would speak with authority and not as the scribes. For if by the Spirit WE KNOW THE TRUTH then by the Spirit we can speak the truth even as it is known and it is He who doeth the work. I have no problems therefore with questions; a good question based upon belief and not contention or unbelief demands and always gets a good answer sooner or later. For if it springs from a sincere desire for more light God always gives it wether by your own private studies bretheren or by a flash of illumination in your meditations by the Holy Spirit. |
