Dear Confused, "Struggling spiritually" is a rather subjective description, and may or may not mean the same thing to different people. Someone who is more mature in the faith may understand the deviousness and tenacity of pride, and thus be struggling with it, while having overcome the majority of their sins. Another may have a lessor view of holiness, and so not be struggling, but may be tolerating more sin. With that being said: Titus, especially chapter one, has some specific criteria that the leadership of the church should meet. These criteria all describe outward characturistics, which are observable by all. Holding the church leadership to this standard keeps us from attempting to judge the heart, which we are not equiped to do. If you have concerns about your church leadership, or you are considering a candidate, first, pray for them. Second, pray for them. If it is up to you to vote for or approve their position, then use these guidelines. If it is not up to you to choose whether or not a person takes this role, pray for those that have been given that responsibility. I hope this helps! Love in Christ, Mark |
