Greetings, Timothy was one of Paul's companions, and one of his most promising students along with Titus. So, no, he wasn't an apostle per se, even though the Eastern Orthodox Church venerates him as an Apostle. However, despite this, Timothy is listed as a co-author of 2 Corinthians, Philippians, Colossians, 1 Thessalonians, 2 Thessalonians, and Philemon. He was also the pastor of the church of Ephesus in the later half of the first century. According to "the Acts of Timothy", he was stoned to death in 97 AD by pagans when he tried to stop the worship of the Roman goddess Diana, which was popular in Ephesus. Jalek |

Hi, Jalek... That is interesting about the Greek Orthodox Church's position. I had not read that. I wonder how they define an apostle? I will see if I can find out. If I get a definitive answer I will post it here. Nonetheless, I am expecting a reply will be something along the lines of a traditional perspective of Timothy and Titus. I would prefer a definition for the title, but it might not be forthcoming. Sometimes in Christendom our way of thinking is as diverse as our numbers. In Him, Doc |

Ephesians 4:11 (NASB) 11 And He gave some as apostles, and some as prophets, and some as evangelists, and some as pastors and teachers, I was always taught there are apostles and there is also "The Twelve Apostles." As my understanding of the definition of Apostle is one that was called of God to go into unchurched areas and establish a church. Raising up local leadership to then be the head of that church so they can then move on to establish more. Many Missionaries today do the work of an Apostles. |
