2 Thes. 2:7 "For the mystery (hidden truth) of lawlessness is already at work; only He who now restrains will do so until He is taken out of the way." In grammatical terms, what is restraining the "Man of Sin" is neuter, referring to an impersonal force, while "He who now restrains" is masculine, suggest a personal figure. Paul apparently expected his readers to understand what or whom he meant (since he had given them instruction when with them), but today's readers should hesitate to clarify by dogmatic opinion what stands unclear in the biblical text itself (it is always helpful to reread 2 Peter 3:15,16 and be remind that even one apostle found difficult passages in the writings of another). The restainer is mentioned nowhere else in the Bible. among interpretations proposed for the restraining power that keeps the Antichrist in check have been 1) Paul's incomplete ministry: the son of perdition would emerge once paul's mission is complete; 2) the Holy Spirit, who keeps things under control until the ripe exchatological moment; 3) God Himself, since it is evil that is held back; 4) the Jewish state at the time; 5) the institution of the human government. The last alternative has in its favor Paul's own experience of benefits gained from Roman citizenship (Acts 16:37; 22:26-29). In addition the neuter expression "what is restraining: could refer to the Roman system of government itself and the masculine "he who is now restraining" to the then-reigning Roman emperor, Claudius, whose tenure (A.D.41-54) was one of the saner eras in Roman imperial history. "The mystery of lawlessness," which was in Paul's day "already at work," need not be taken as some deep secret. Good and evil alike occur in the world. As the final Day of the Lord approaches, when evil rouses and the limiting forces are withdrawn, "the lawlessness one will be revealed", but-as made clear a generation later in the Book of Revelation-the result will be the final destruction of the Antichrist and all the forces of evil, with God and Christ in the final triumph. Meanwhile, there are many who "believe the lie, because they did not believe the truth". People will believe something. Now the hinderer of lawlessness what is it? 1) It is something already known (v.6) 2) It now hinders lawlessness (v.6-7) 3) It is strong enough to prevent the revelation of the Antichrist (v.6-8) 4) It will hinder lawlessness until it is removed from the earth (v.7-8) 5) It is called "he" (v.7) 6) It will be removed from the earth before the second advent(v.7-8) 7) It will not be here when Christ comes to destroy the Antichrist (v.7-8) The hinderer in one of three things: 1) Governments (Rom 13:1-7; 1 Peter 2:13) 2) The church (Mat.5:13; 2 Cor. 10:4-7) 3) The Holy Spirit (John 16:7-15) The hinderer of lawlessness must be the one that will be taken out of the world before Antichrist can be revealed (v.6-8). Will government be taken out of this world? NO, because Antichrist reigns over many kingdoms (Dan 7:24; 11:40-45), and the other kings reign over the rest of the earth all during the time the hinderer of lawlessness is removed (Rev. 11:15; 16:13-16). Will it be the Holy Spirit? No, for He will be here all through the tribulation and forever (John 14:16; Acts 2:16-21; Rev. 12:17 with 19:10; Zech 12:10-13:1). Multitudes will be saved by the Holy Spirt during the tribulation, as now (acts 2:16-21; Rev 6:9-11; 7:1-21; 12:5,17: 15:2-4; 20:4-6). It is the Church. It will be rapture before Antichrist comes and this is the only one of the hinderers of lawlessness that will be removed from the earth (1 Thes 4:16) |
