Greetings Searcher! Should we assume that Elijah had alreay taken his chariot ride at the time of this letter? Scripture does not give a date for the event of his ride. So, it is quite possible that Elijah could have still been alive. Here is what the Bible Knowledge Commentary says about this question: "21:12-15. In a final word of condemnation the Prophet Elijah sent a letter to Jehoram in which he charged the king with behaving like an Israelite and not like his godly fathers (vv. 12-13). Now the Lord would strike the nation and Jehoram’s family with a heavy blow and would afflict him with an incurable disease of the bowels (vv. 14-15). This letter from Elijah is of more than passing interest because it is the only known written message from the great prophet. Some scholars allege that it could not be authentic since, they say, Elijah was translated to heaven before Jehoram began to reign. But Elijah was still living on earth in the days of Joram, son of Ahab, who succeeded his brother Ahaziah in 852 b.c. (cf. 2 Kings 1:17). This event, the author of 2 Kings wrote, occurred ”in the second year of Jehoram . . . king of Judah.“ Though Jehoram’s sole regency in Judah began in the year of Jehoshaphat’s death (848), he co-reigned with his father from 853 to 848. It is still true, of course, that Jehoram could not have murdered his brothers until after 848 so the matter of Elijah’s knowledge of this fact still remains. Since there is no certain way to date Elijah’s translation perhaps it did not take place until 848 or even later." I hope this adds to the dicussion my friend! Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |

By brother and friend, Tim, God's day to you, Very interesting that the Bible never says Elijah or Enoch died. Of course, the flood happened the same year Enoch left. I still think somehow Elijah's letter was sent earlier ... the 50 couldn't find him and we aren't told where Elijah was ... Does the verb sent give a tense sense? Could it have been sent, even recieved, earlier and since the results apparently happened right after, it wasn't inspired by the Holy Spirit to include it until then. The bottom line is we don't know when it was written - sent or received. Searcher |

Greetings Searcher! I certainly have no problem with the possibility that the letter could have been written long before the events of 2 Chr. 21:12 and sent later. Elijah was a prophet after all! ;-) As far as the verb, 2 Chron. 21:12 doesn't use 'sent', but rather the verse says that a writing 'came' to him from Elijah. No help there, I am afraid. :-) Your Brother in Christ, Tim Moran |
