Hi, kelode64... Welcome to the forum! This is a good question. Of course, why questions are generally the most difficult of questions to answer, since we are delving into the intentions of the mind of God. Certainly you will understand that when a why question is not explicitly answered, we cannot be as dogmatic with the answer (Deuteronomy 29:29). Nonetheless, we can certainly make a good guess, based on the thrust of the rest of the Scriptures. I would like to suggest that it is because it does not come "naturally" for women to properly submit to their husbands, any more than it comes "naturally" for men to love their wives. These are traits we inherit from our first parents. Think about how Adam and Eve behaved in the fall (Genesis 3). Eve inappropriately dominates in the family and Adam fails to assert the proper ordinances in God's creation (1 Timothy 2:14). The relationship between man and wife is a picture of Christ and the church (Ephesians 5:23) -- a picture that is designed to exemplify to the world God's plan of redemption. When that picture gets all messed up, God is dishonored (Titus 2:3). But fleshly, fallen humans tend to walk out a messed up picture (1 Corinthians 2:12-16). Consequently, only the redeemed can behave in a way that restores the picture that God built into creation. It is part and parcel with walking out the gospel. That is why, if you will notice, those commands you are asking about are directed to believers. By the way, you will notice that one of the primary citations about this is Ephesians 5. However, if you fail to rightly understand the doctrine spelled out in Ephesians 1-3, Ephesians 4-6 will only lead to a disappointing moralism. The doctrine of the first half of the book, is the basis for the imperatives in the second half of the book -- including, of course, the directives for husbands, wives, and children. In Him, Doc |
