Romans 11:1 begins by saying that God hasn't cast off Israel, indeed Paul himself is of the lineage of Israel. According to verse 5, there "is a remnant according to the election by grace." As a nation (a whole), Israel has not obtained what she seeks. Although a remnant of Israel believes on Jesus Christ. The religious leaders (as a whole) rejected the Son of God, Jesus Christ, even as many do today. Since the nation (as a whole) rejects the truth of the salvation of God by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, they have fallen short of their calling. Through their fall, God chose to accept Gentiles as sons through faith in His Son(John 1:11-13). They rejected the testimony of the Father concerning the Son.Romans 11:12 actually says, "Now if the fall [trespass] of them be the riches of the world, and the diminishing [failure] of them the riches of the Gentiles? How much more their fullness?" When you continue to read you'll find that the point is that although Israel as a nation were denied access to salvation for they sought it by works; God will accept them if they turn back to Him by faith: "And they [Israel] also, if they abide not still in unbelief, shall be grafted in: for God is able to graft them in again" Romans 11:23. So salvation by grace through faith is available to both Jew and Gentile, even all people that believe on Jesus Christ...God's mercy is available to all who receive Him. Romans is written to a Christian audience,a congregation of believers. As to riches, it is speaking of spiritual riches...Romans 2:3 And think you this, O man, that judge them which do such things, and do the same, that you shall escape the judgment of God? 4 Or despise you the RICHES OF HIS goodness and forbearance and long-suffering; not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance? 5 But after your hardness and impenitent heart treasure up to yourself wrath against the day of wrath and revelation of the righteous judgment of God; 6 Who will render to every man according to his deeds: 7 To them who by patient continuance in well doing seek for glory and honor and immortality, eternal life: 8 But to them that are contentious, and do not obey the truth, but obey unrighteousness, indignation and wrath, 9 Tribulation and anguish, on every soul of man that does evil, of the Jew first, and also of the Gentile; 10 But glory, honor, and peace, to every man that works good, to the Jew first, and also to the Gentile: 11For there is no respect of persons with God. A Christian is advised to not become prideful or boastful against Israel, nor be high-minded. Also, the Christian is reminded that believing in Christ means to follow the teachings of Jesus Christ by the power of the Holy Spirit working within his/her heart. | ||||||
