2 | The wedding at Cana | John | wdmarmet | 159590 | ||
One of the great themes of John concerning the ministry and death of Jesus is that he was in total control at all times. John states a few times in consideration of a crowd wanting to get Jesus in order to kill him that "his time was not yet". In other words, he was master of the path he was walking. In light of Mary's request (demand?) at the marriage feast at Cana, this seems to be another account of the same type of thing. He was not going to begin his miraculous ministry at the command of another. He was doing it in his own time. Later, when the time was right, he did perform the miracle. Mary should be commended for recognizing this and telling the men at the feast to do whatever Jesus bid them to do. Evidently she realized that something was about to happen. Jesus was in control of the event though, and as such, didn't allow anyone else to convince him to step away from his plan. |
