1 | if Jesus died on Friday and rose Sunday | John | Searcher56 | 118654
I mistyped ... it is Luke 24:21, not Luke 24:1. - There are two Sabbaths because Luke 24:21 indicates Sunday was the third since He died. If they were on the same day, the women would have gone to the grave on day after He died (Friday), and not rested on both (Luke 23:56). - Luke 24:21 indicates the "extra day" - I agree with you he was buried the same day he died. ----------------- Nisan 14 (daytime) (Th) - Preparation Day/ Killing of The Lamb ... Day of all this took place, including His death (Luke 24:20-21) - Day 1 in the tomb ... He was buried before evening. (Matt 27:11-61, Mark 15:1-47, Luke 23:1-55, John 18:28-19:42) Mark 15:1 says "Very early in the morning." John 18:28 says the Jews had not eaten the Passover, which would be that evening, Nisan 15. ----------------- Nisan 15 (Th/Fr) - Guard at the Tomb (High Sabbath) ... one day since His death (Luke 24:1) - Night 1/ Day 2 in the tomb (Matt 27:62-66) ... Now since the Jews had eaten the Passover, they could go back to Pilate. They knew what He said, so they could have requested this when they were there before. ----------------- Nisan 16 (Fr/Sa) - Weekly Sabbath ... second days since His death (Luke 24:1) - Night 2/ Day 3 in the tomb (Luke 23:56) ... This Sabbath could be either the High Sabbath or weekly Sabbath. ----------------- Nisan 17 (Sa/Su) - Firstfruits (Lev 23:9-14) ... third day since His death (Luke 24:21) - Night 3 in the tomb ... He arose before sunrise (Matt 28:1-15, Mark 16:1-11, Luke 24:1-49, John 20:1-23) ... First Day of the Week |

2 | if Jesus died on Friday and rose Sunday | John | Fletch | 118658
I see in Luke 24:21 it says three days, but it is to my understanding that in those days even parts of days were counted, not 24 hour periods as we do. Such as in word for word translations look at John 20:26 "Eight days later." Eight days, to my understanding is talking about a week, from sunday to sunday. If this is so then the three days would be Sunday, Saturday and Friday. If they talking about 24 hour periods it would be Thursday, but that is not my understanding of how they would count days back then.
3 | if Jesus died on Friday and rose Sunday | John | Searcher56 | 118674
The key word in Luke 24:21 is SINCE .............. -One day Sunday since is Saturday -Two days Sunday since is Friday -Three days Sunday since is Thursday ... Since is not inclusive. John 20:26 says "After eight days" ... it doesn't have to be a week (7 days). I think it was eight or maybe even nine days after John 20:19, "So when it was evening on that day, the first day of the week". |

As for Luke 24:21 I will have to study more and pray about it, but John 20:26 I am pretty sure it means a week, because I have ready several books which state how they counted days in that time, and also if you look at translations that are not word for word and are idea based such as the NIV and ASV it says week instead of eight days. Either way thank you for all the information you have given me. Brother in Christ, Rex |
