Hi, John... A Jew is anyone descended from Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob or one who has converted to Judaism. Jewish nationality, ethnicity, religion, and culture are all interrelated and overlapping. It is that way now and it was that way in time of Christ. Broadly speaking, anyone who stood at the foot of Mount Sinai when Moses received the Law was a Jew. You are correct, that the term traces itself to the tribe of Judah. Historically, these were the people who remained loyal to the house of David. Until the destruction of the Temple in 70 AD, every Jew could trace their lineage by specific documentation that was stored in the Temple. Since then, it has become more a matter of tracing surnames. (Which means that Jesus' lineage was verifiable by anyone in His day.) Now, I am a Jewish convert to Christianity. Most Jews would assert that I have relinquished Jewish heritage to become a gentile. On the other hand as Christians, we describe Jewish people (religiously) as broken off branches (Romans 11:17). It makes for a uniquely personal challenge at times. In Him, Doc |
